Legends of Ag: Dewbre Cattle

In this Strayhorn‘s Legend of Ag edition, we will learn more about a family-run ranch in Rogers, New Mexico called Dewbre Cattle. Brandon and Julie Dewbre have owned and operated their cow-calf operation, Dewbre Cattle, since December 2011. The ranch’s emphasis is on producing high-quality replacement Angus females, registered Angus bulls, and beef shares.

In 1994 the ranch was owned and operated by a man named Randy Davis who, after working hard in the construction industry, was finally able to fulfill his life’s dream when he purchased the ranch for his family in New Mexico. After expanding the ranch into west Texas, Randy met Brandon while working cattle with the neighbours and soon introduced him to his daughter, Julie. Brandon and Julie married in 2004, and Randy continued to run the ranch until his sudden and untimely death in 2011. At that time, Julie and Brandon moved back to Rogers to take over for her father.

Since 2011, Brandon and Julie have been running an extremely successful ranch, with Brandon receiving the “Wildlife Conservationist” award in 2018 for Region 1 in Texas by the Texas Conservation Awards Program! There are a number of reasons that Dewbre Cattle has been so successful; but the most notable and unique are these:

  1. Dewbre Cattle was started during one of the worst droughts in 2011. Although there have been a few decent years since then, the area is still considered very dry. As such, Brandon and Julie implemented a substantial rotational grazing system that has alleviated stress during times of drought!

  2. AI breeding was introduced into the herd at Dewbre Cattle recently, and they have since been able to maintain cow size and profitability by utilizing some of the best genetics that will fit the environment.

Last, but not least:

  1. The people! Brandon and Julie are not the only ones at the ranch. Son, Zac, and twins Kolton and Kinley are active in the day-to-day work and love being involved! Everyone in the family wears many hats, and most of the maintenance is done themselves; but during seasonal workings, in addition to seasonal day hands, the community bands together by trading days out to help everyone get through the season’s works!
